Dahoam is dahoam (Teil 1) - Home is where the heart is (part 1)

Tomorrow will be my first day at work after one year of maternity leave. Well, in fact monday would have been my first day if it weren't for a night at the hospital with my ill son (who however is quite ok again)... I'll commute to Munich 2-3 days each week from our village in the Allgäu (rural area about 100 km west of Munich, close to the Alps). And you know what: I'm really excited. Even though the feeling is different than it was after my leave with R. Back then we lived in the historic cener of Memmingen, which was really great when it was just my husband and I, but not so ideal when we became a family. Even though all grandparents lived nearby and also my sister and her son visited us often, at the end of the maternity leave I still had a strong desire for some contact with other adults and some brain jogging.

This time it's not that extreme. We now live in a little village, have super nice neighbors, that are always open for some chat, R is at Kindergarten where I've met some great other mamas and then there's sewing and blogging. Yes, it's true that this has become an important outlet for me. I also feel like I've learned a lot during the last year. I know some html, know for example what image-mappinug is, the basic of photoshop and how to get nice pics (even though I'm not always able to use what I know). Especially the photo editing is something that I'll also be able to get some use of at work. I'll also get into Illustrator within the next time. I've used Corel Draw so far, but have the feeling that Illustrator would be more up to date and something that more people use. And then the sewing. I'm really proud about what I've learned within the last 2-3 years. 2.5 years I struggled to get a pillow casing right and now I've mastered the Dirndl with all bling bling. I have come to a point where I can't see any clothing item without thinking about how it has been put together. Even my husband knows phrases like piping, gathering, trim, ricrac etc.

So, as I said. This time I had a much better balance and so the pressure to do something with my brain isn't as big as after the last maternity leave. Nonetheless, I'm really excited to be a scientist again. After all that has been my dream since I was 15. I already have thousands of ideas. I don't know which project, which experiment to tackle first. I'm looking forward to go crazy about new projects with my favorite colleagues Roman and Kai, to be in the lab, to use to microscope and to measure some samples, to remelt some lava and to determine magnetizations. I'm looking forward to connect results of various experiments, to make interesting plots and to write articles for scienitfic journals, to visit conferences and to hopefully soon do some field trips to Iceland, Armenia or somewhere else. Ah, I love my work...

I'm even looking forward to the commuting (by train). I travel one way two hours. But while other commuters complain about that each day, I don't think that it's that bad. On my way to work I normally sleep or read the newspaper, on the way back I have a book with me or a nice magazine. And as - since yesterday I'm finally the owner of a smartphone - I can also visit my favorite blogs...

Last, but not least, I'm looking forward to being in Munich. When I started to study in Munich after I had finished school, this was mainly due to the absence of other possiblities. Only very few german universities offer a degree in geophysics and as I wanted to stay close to my home town, I could only go to Munich. It took me quite a while to fall for Munich. Once this was due to the 36 hours of courses in the physics programme (+ the additionally 10 hourse of homework). Secondly,  I was playing in the Second Fistball League of Germany at SV Amendingen and had to go home at the weekend for training and games. There wasn't much time left to explore Munich. I really got to like Munich when I didn't live there anymore. Since I'm commuting to Munich, I'm experiencing it much more intensly. I enjoy my days off from village life, I love to ride my bike in the spring air through Munich like 1000s others, to sit in front of one of the many cafes in Schwabing or on a park bench and to let the sun shine on me. Munich has its own flair and it's not for nothing called "the northernmost city of Italy". Even if it took quite a while: Munich is "home" or as we say it in Bavarian: Dahoam.

Euch werd ich hier dann immer wieder in meiner neuen Blog-Reihe "Dahoam is dahoam" davon berichten.

So, over the years Munich has become a part of me. But when I looked through the september 2013 volume of the Merian magazine about Munich, I was still astonished. Wow, there's so much that I haven't seen so far. There's so much still do discover. It's the old problem. If oyu live or work somewhere you feel like there's so much time to visit the sights that you just delay it again and again. While as a tourist you want to see as much as possible within in your few days of visit. I have decided to be a little bit more like a tourist in the future. There'll be times that I'll travel really early to Munich to walk around the Munich English Gardens, stretch my lunch break and visit one of the museums close to my university building, or after work take a walk around a quarter that I haven't been to before. I'll share my discoveries with you in the new blog series "Dahoam is dahoam" (or in a very free translation: Home is where the heart is). So, Munich, bring it up!

    1. My first days at work were really nice. Good to see my colleagues again... Obviously a lot of adminstration stuff to do, but also some science work got done so I'm quite satisfied...

  2. Great post. I loved hearing about your scientific self - deciding which experiment to tackle next. What a strong example you are setting for your little ones!!

P.S. Maybe your "Shades of Me" project can be an embellished lab coat?

Take care, may your transition back to work be smooth:)

    1. well, i haven't thought about myself as a strong example ;) i was quite good at school, but in this science world i have met some incredibly intelligent people! they have a lot more going than i do... but well i'm living my dream and that's what i want my children to one day do to. it doesn't matter if it's an academic life or some handy work. i just want them to find something that they love and to go for it... so yes i'm at least trying to set an example for my little ones!
hmm, an embellished lab coat? i'm rarely using one, but that is a fun idea...
