Weekend sewing #1

Starting today I will show you every or at least almost every friday what goodies I found in sewing blogs around the world during the last week. And who knows: Maybe one of the links will inspire you to do a "weekend sewing" project.

Was?

First things first: The new dates for kids clothes week (KCW) have been announced: Mark the October 21 to 27 in your calender. This is the week to sew your child's fall wardrobe. What? You do not know what KCW is? Then go check it out right away. People from all over the world will spend one hour each day during this week sewing clothes for their kids. And you can be sure: There's a lot of awesomeness heading your way!

Außerdem ist gerade die 3. Woche von Project run and play.
* diesen schönen Mantel von Frances and Suzanne

It's the third week of Project run and play (you have seen my sew along entries here and here). This weeks theme is "Mad for plaid". Some posts that you just have to look at are:
* of course what the designers did:
* this beautiful coat by Frances and Suzanne
* that cool bather by Sew Pony
* this whole outfit and the stunning photography by Daisies and Dresses

While next week is the last week of project run and play (PRAP), it is also the first week of Project Sewn. While PRAP means sewing for your kids, the designers at Project Sewn, sew for themselves. Again there is a sew-along and again I'm sure that some major eye-candy is heading our way. You can check out the schedule for the up-coming weeks here. I went already fabric shopping and hope to sew something for at least two of the four weeks...

 Flip This Pattern

Last but not least another series that you have to check out! Frances and Suzanne have chosen patterns for each month within one year that all of us should "flip". Turn a vest into a dress, a shirt into a jacket etc. So long there have been amazing ideas! This month's pattern is Sunki by Figgy.

Mad for plaid #2

Here I have another post for "Mad for plaid" at project run and play. This one, however, is not to be entered in the sew-along contest as it was sewn about one year ago for R to wear at my nieces blessing. Back then I didn't have a blog and now that I have one I want to show most of the things that I've made in the last 1-2 years (which is when I started sewing). This whole outfit just fits too well to the Mad for plaid theme and so I'm taking the chance to show it in the link party.

Mad for plaid #1

The 3rd week of project run and play is on. This week's theme is "mad for plaid". I'm sewing along again. This time doing an "upcycle": An old fannel button-up of my husband turned into a vest and 3/4 length pants for my daughter.

Both patterns are from a Burda kids magazine from summer 2012.

The vest lining is a cotton from buttinette and I used the same fabric for applications on the vest and pants. You'll see it again in some other posts in the near future.

Just some last pics to show how things worked out at the seams. It's not perfect, but I'm quite content with the result.

Last but not least I'm linking this with some link parties: creadienstag, isew and project run and play.

Kaleidoscope pattern test

Some weeks ago I had the great opportunity to test one of Kate's new fall patterns, the Kaleidoscope top. This was my second time of pattern testing for Kate (I'll show you pics of the other test soon) and again I had a lot of fun while sewing. The top is a loose fitting, boxy top with banded sleeves. It is a really easy and fast sew that can totally be your first knit sewing experience. I do not have a serger and sewed it entirely on my Elna sewing machine using a stretch stitch. This way the seams are unfinished, but the shirt is not something that I want to sell and R doesn't really care what it looks from the inside...

I was in the first round of testers after which Kate changed the pattern again quite a bit. The final version is a lot shorter and there is an additional elastic hemline and a optional bow at the front included. I'm sure that these changes also give a darling outfit, though for me no changes would have been necessary. I like the more tunic, casual look a lot, but will surely also try the final version which Kate kindly gave to all testers (Stay tuned for that one). Our neighbor, the mother of R's best friend also liked the top a lot. She told me that she'd want one for herself - though without the owls ;)

Allerdings ohne Eulen ;)

Well, this truely is another thing, that is "made with love"...

Smarties Geburtstagsshirt / Smarties birthday tee

For her 4th birthday I decided to sew R a shirt and some things to go with it. When the themes for this season of project run and play were published, I got to think that maybe I could do one of the themes for her birthday. To tell you the truth: The candy was chosen after a long look at my different fabrics. I loved this fabric that Pamela Hilti (enemenemeins) has designed for lillestoff. And then it hit me: this really is a smarties fabric and thus, perfect for my little girl for whom a birthday without a smarties birthday cake wouldn't be a birthday. Well, it was set: She would get a smarties birthday tee.

I used Rae's flashback skinny tee pattern and was not disappointed. Sewing a shirt from this pattern was actually the very first knit sewing project that I tackled last year (I'll show this some time the next weeks/months). Back then the fit was almost to skinny, but I guess the upcycled sweater knit was just not stretchy enough. This time I used a size 4T and it is perfect. A slim fit, but still comfy. The instructions were very detailed and helped me to sew a really professional looking garment on my normal sewing machine (I don't own a serger). I really love the result.

As fall has definitely arrived in Germany, I decided to also make a infinity scarf. I followed Ina's great video tutorial, but used my own measurements as I wanted the scarf to be really close to her neck. I further made a beanie using the free farbenmix Bettina pattern and the instructions by Kaddi. I wasn't sure if they would fit, but both the loop and the beanie are spot on (Sorry for the missing photo of R wearing the beanie, but I decided to not show her face on this blog...).

R loves her whole new outfit and all the other children at the Kindergarten, which btw is not the same as the US Kindergardens, really liked the appliqued 4.

Oh, and last but not least: This year's smarties birthday cake.

Und zum Abschluss noch den heutigen Smarties-Geburtstagskuchen.

P.S. Sorry for the bad pictures (flash and so on), but it was rainy all day and there was no way to get a pic without the flash.

4 Jahre! 4 years!

Today is my daughter R's 4th birthday. For many days she has been quite excited about her upcoming day, but also a bit afraid: "Mama, what if I don't get any presents?" Well no need for this fear :)

It's now or never!

Was? Ihr wisst nicht was project run and play ist? Dann sofort hin!

Well. Even though my blog is still far from what I would like it to like, I've decided to start posting. Project run and play (prap) started yesterday and I've already finished two garments. What you don't know what project run and play is? Then check it out right away. The contestants of prap are always some of the best english-speaking (and some other) sewing bloggers and the sew-along group is full of creativity. This week I'm not sewing along. A remix of the Oliver and S popover sundress would have been too much during the last weeks of holiday, shortly before a family vacation and my daugther R's birthday. But next weeks outfit for the "candy" theme is done already. Here I have a little teaser for you (featuring our cat Findus):

Let's see. Maybe I'll get to finishing one or two further posts, so that this blog finally gets going...
