Book review / Buchrezension: Happy Homemade - Sew Chic Kids

Some months ago the people from Tuttle publishing contacted me to ask whether I'd be interested in reviewing some of their kid sewing books with japanese patterns (the books are in english). Of course I wanted. I have followed several blog series on japanes sewing books/patterns (You and Mie, Sew along, tanoshii) and always wanted to check those books out, too. I got three different books, but today I will only introduce "Happy Homemade - Sew Chic Kids". I won't show pics of every garment in the book to you. If you are interested in seeing this, check out www.japanesesewingbooks.com. The link brings you directly to the detailed review of this book, but you can find reviews of pretty much every japanese sewing book (japenese and english versions) there! You might also want to check out this sew along from You and Mie and Elsie Marley for a Hoodie from the book.

I just want to say that I LOVE this book. I can picture myself sewing many of the patterns. I especially like the blouses and shorts patterns - I'm already longing for spring so that I can try out the Roll-up Shorts and the Knee-Length Shorts for my son. They are so cool. The dresses are super beautiful, too. My favorites are the Dress with Square Neckline and the Pinafore. The book also includes some general tips for cutting and sewing plus instructional drawings for each garment. The book includes four pattern sheets in an envelope in the back. The pattern pieces overlap at some parts, but it's not a crazy mess like with Burda or Ottobre sheets.

To really "test" the book I decided to sew R a christmas outfit using pattern "n Front-buttoned Smock". I altered the sleeves slightly. In the book they are elbow length with a frill, but I guessed that the weather would be too cold in Germany to wear just elbow length sleeves at Christmas (and luckily I was right!). So I cut them longer, didn't use a frill (with long sleeves there would be a real mess at the dinner table...) and instead just added some elastic.

Sewing the blouse was quite easy. I got along well with the drawings and instructions. Of course you can't compare it with the detailed instructions in a pdf pattern and I wouldn't recommend to actually learn sewing with patterns like these, but if you have some sewing experience then this book is really great.

I love how the blouse turned out. The fabric is Shimmering reflections from Brambleberry ridge by Michael Miller Fabrics. The gold dots take it from just dots to something special and makes it festive without being to dressy for my daughter.

Der Stoff ist Shimmering reflections from Brambleberry ridge by Michael Miller Fabrics. Die goldenen Punkte machen dabei aus einem einfachen Punktestoff was richtig besonderes, dass gleichzeitig nicht zu over the top für meine Tochter ist.

To finish the outfit I sewed two skirts. R wore the purple one at christmas and the golden one at New Year's Eve. Here, I took the chance to finally sew something using Oliver+S patterns. Yes, bad me, I haven't sewn anything using their patterns so far. To get a first impression I decided to use two of their free patterns: The Onstage Tutu Skirt and the Lazy Days Skirt. These are both really simply skirt designs (basically rectangles), but I was interested in seeing the instructions etc. They really were detailed with nice illustrations and I really like the idea of the fold-over waistband of the onstage tutu skirt. However, I guess to see whether the Oliver+S patterns really are my cup of tea, I'll have to purchase one of the more sophisticated patterns. People keep saying that the instructions are soo much better than those in other patterns and these skirts were just too easy to recognize a difference.
The two leggings are my 100th and 101st (?) version of the Go To Leggings.

Version der Go To Leggings.

I got the fabrics for the skirts from stoffe.de for free. Their email came right in time. I wanted to order some more festive fabrics anyways and their collection of all kinds of fabrics is huge. The golden fabric is this polyester taffeta, the purple tulle you can find here and the purple cotton here. Sewing with all fabrics went really well and I just love the look together with the blouse.

Big thanks to Brandon from Tuttle Publishing and Christine from stoffe.de for letting me review their book and fabrics. I greatly appreciated it!

Toll!
