Summer tee for R / Sommershirt für R

When I took the pics of J in his new „World off Music on“ Tee, I realised that R was also wearing a tee that I had never posted about. So I took the chance and also snapped some pics of that one. This tee is in fact my first and so far only project with a serger. Normally I just use my sewing machine also for the knit projects. Since some months I have a walking foot, which is great for the thinner tissue jerseys, but also without the walking foot I had managed to sew pretty much everything with my machine (which in fact is a Elna experience 540). This tee, however, I sewed already last year in February or so with Miriam's (mirid.de) serger. We had only recently got to know each other and this was the first time that we joined sewing forces ;) We met in her sewing studio, Miriam let me choose one of her tee patterns (I have no idea which one it was – sorry) and also some fabric from her jersey stash which as she says „is larger than she“. She then showed me how to use the serger. Though I was a bit afraid, it was fun, fast and I really loved the result. And so did R. Already last year it was one of her favorite tees. The print is just so joyful, summer-y and she loves to look for the little Pippi Longstocking that is swimming in the lake ;) I'm glad that it fits still well. This shirt really got and will get worn a lot. Btw. Miriam posted the tee already last year. Go take a look!

Coming back to the serger vs. sewing machine issue: As I said, sewing with the serger was really fast and I really love how polished the shirt looks also inside. I will therefore most like buy a serger one day. However, I don't really long for it that strongly. I even think that I'd rather have a flat lock sewing machine as that'd really give me some new possibilities. I haven't found the perfect way to hem and topstitch my knit garments so far. The stretch stitch of my sewing machine often has little „errors“ that I don't really want to show and it also tends to stretch the neckline. And the zig-zag stitch? Well, it's the zig zag stitch... I guess I'll finally have to buy a jerysey double needle and to try this. Would be a neat finish, too. How do you hem your shirts?

And last, but not least I link this to Creadienstag, the German "creative tuesday" link party and to PR&P Summer Sewing linky party.

  4. Annika I totally get your thinking about serger vs coverstitch. Everything I've read says to get a serger first... But I find what I really crave is a good way to get my knits hemmed! My double needle is generally ok but I don't like the finish on the back, and they never look like they're very strong. I would love a serger for the speed, but in some ways a coverstitch seems like a more 'urgent' need. Never mind, though, because I'm probably not getting either any time soon!
